The Rhode Island Council of Teachers of English Presents

“Educating for Diversity and Democracy”

When: Thursday, March 29th

Time: 4:30 – 6:30 pm

Where: JWU Culinary Archives Theatre Room

Guest Speaker:  Marc Levitt

In his talk, 'Educating for Diversity and Democracy', Marc Levitt, will look at how education in the near future will hopefully be directed towards creating Global Citizenry and will include education for democracy, the celebration of 'deep' diversity', individual initiative, critical thinking and an appreciation for cooperative action. Mr. Levitt will question the current trend in government mandated education that takes, in his opinion, a narrow view of what constitutes proficiency and in fact cruelty and cynically promises ‘advancement’ and possibility for urban youth in schools that successfully follow this approach.

Marc Levitt is a writer/storyteller/radio host and has recently completed a documentary film on Narragansett Indian stonemasons. He also created and directed the nationally recognized Charles Fortes Museum project where curiosity about their 19th Century former factory building and multicultural/historical Providence Neighborhood, led students to research and to create artist inspired, museum quality exhibits.

Currently, Mr. Levitt tours the
United States and has visited over thirty countries with his stories and workshops for students and teachers on writing, diversity celebration and curiosity building. Mr. Levitt has two award winning compilations of stories with August House Publications.

Following Mr. Levitt’s discussion round tables will be formed (along with refreshments) to further discuss but are not limited to:

  • Using the Neighborhood as a Textbook
  • Site Specific Education
  • Making the Ordinary, Extraordinary
